Hari steals the Money.
One evening, Anil comes home with a small bundle of notes. He tells Hari that he has earned six hundred rupees by selling his book to a publisher. Anil tucks away the money under his mattress while sleeping.
Now Hari thinks it is the right time to do his real job. He thinks that it is better if he steals the money because Anil is anyways going to waste it on his friends. Hari believes there is no pleasure in robbing a careless man as sometimes he doesn’t even notice that he has been robbed.
At Night Hari goes to Anil’s room and slowly withdraws the money kept under the mattress. With that money, Hari could live like a rich man for a week or two. Now Hari reaches the Railway Station to catch the 10:30 Lucknow Express. But for some unknown reason, he just couldn’t board the train. His conscience wouldn’t allow him to do that. He starts feeling guilty for cheating a person like Anil and destroying his trust.
Hari returns back to Anil.
Now Hari is left there alone and has nowhere to go. he doesn’t have any friends to go to. So he decides to go back to Anil. On his way back he thinks about how different people react after being robbed. The Greedy man shows fear; the rich man shows anger and the poor man shows acceptance.
He sits on a bench in the maidan and then it starts raining heavily. Hari is drenched and all the notes get wet. Hari thinks about Anil’s generous nature and how he has treated him with love and respect.
When Hari reaches back he slides the notes carefully under the bed. The next day when Hari wakes up Anil had already made tea. Anil gives Hari a 50 rupee note which is still wet. Now Hari thinks that he has been caught. But Anil doesn’t say anything to him. He assures Hari that he would regularly pay him from now and both smile at each other.
In this modern world filled with crime and fear, it is very hard to trust anyone. But sometimes all it takes to change a person is some love and care. Nowadays it is very difficult to find people who love you unconditionally and don’t expect anything in return.
The Moral of the lesson is that true love can transform even the most wicked person. Throughout the chapter, we can see that how Anil’s compassion towards Hari started to slowly transform him from within. Hari couldn’t feel the change at first but when it was time to cheat anil and take his money, he just couldn’t do it.
